Emerging Issues

Emerging issues are clusters of reports that are about an important event or issue. Each issue contains a user-generated summary. Users can add forecasts, and each issue has a comment thread for further discussion. Possible topics for analysis or discussion are: Will the event/issue happen again? (Shrimp/Prawn) Starts Operations Quarantine first National Aquaculture Centre of SAGARPA view

MEXICO - The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) has put into operation the first Quarantine National Aquaculture Centre in the community of Costa de Hermosillo, Sonora, with the aim of boosting the production of farmed shrimp that are of high quality and free of pathogens (such as white spot virus).

This work should help to ensure the availability of shrimp which has a high market demand.

Through work with the United States, Mexico will produce shrimp which are resistant to white spot virus.

(Amphibian) Fungus Spread By Bullfrogs Also Can Kill Some view

There is currently a global decline in amphibian populations. It is believed that a major cause for this decline is a fungus thought to be spread by bullfrogs.

A two-year study from Oregon State and the University of Pittsburgh reveals bullfrogs are not only tolerant carriers that spread the disease, as previously thought. The bullfrogs are also dying from the pathogen.

(Fish) Sea Lice Numbers Lower During Spring [Norway] view

NORWAY - Sea lice levels have been low during spring this year and in many places, numbers were lower than the same period last year.

Monitoring shows that sea lice pressure on wild salmonids has been low and that the majority of salmon smolts probably came out with little lice.

"Low water temperatures, well coordinated delousing and good supervision is why our situation has been so good," says Kristina Landsverk, supervising director of the FSA.

(Salmon) Salmon production drop expected in 2014 view

The Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) estimates that next year, salmon and trout total production will be about 530,000 tonnes, which represents a decrease of 24 per cent compared to that expected for 2013, reaching 700,000 tonnes.

This reduction is a consequence of lower stockings and of the new limits set for the fish density in the water.

Anyway, the Chilean government predicts an improvement in profitability.

(Fish) Fish Diseases Threaten Food Supply In Warm Climates view

A rise in fish farms has meant cheap, fast-growing protein to feed the world's growing human population. But a new study suggests that countries located at lower latitudes – many of which rely heavily on fish farming – may be most at risk for fish disease outbreaks. The tropical environments in countries near the equator are ripe for breeding waterborne pathogens.

(Fish) Water Tests Don't Answer Temple Fish Kill Questions view

Two days after hundreds of fish turned up dead in a Temple park, more questions are now surfacing.

What could have caused the fish to go belly-up just hours after they were placed in the pond? Why didn't anyone mention the same kind of fish kill happened there just a month ago? And what comes next?

This year for the first time, Scot Tyson decided to hold the Elks Lodge fishing derby at Miller Park in Temple.

(Shrimp/Prawn) Thai disease could negate US duty effect on shrimp exports view

The 5.91 per cent countervailing duty imposed by the US Government on shrimps from India is unlikely to hit the volume of exports to the US, which is India's largest shrimp market.

The duty, announced by the US Department of Commerce on May 29, is sure to raise exporters' costs. Together with the existing 3.5 per cent anti-dumping duty, exporters now have to pay nearly 9 per cent of the value of their shipments to the US Custom and Border Patrol upfront at the port of entry. This is an additional cost that most likely will be passed on to shrimp producers.
